Death Valley
Das Death Valley ist eine der heißesten Gegenden der Erde
mit Tageshöchsttemperaturen bis zu 57° C.
Den furchterregenden Namen erhielt die etwa 30 km breite
und 200 km lange Region zur Goldrauschzeit 1848/49,
als viele Siedler sich auf dem Weg nach Kalifornien hier verirrten.
Das Death Valley ist vor allem
durch seine erstaunliche Landschaftsvielfalt interessant.
Sanddünen wechseln mit scharfen Felsskulpturen und Vulkankratern.
Erdgeschichtlich war die Region ursprünglich Teil eines Ozeans,
der durch die Auffaltung der Sierra Nevada
in einen Regenschatten geriet und austrocknete.
Übrig blieb eine gewaltige Salzkruste.
Die Höhenunterschiede innerhalb des Schutzgebiets reichen von 3.368 m
über 1.669 m bis hinunter zu 85 m unter dem Meeresspiegel (nahe Badwater).
Dies ist der tiefste Punkt der gesamten westlichen Hemisphere
